Commission II Agrees on Regional Elections Postponement
Commission II of the House of Representatives – overseeing matters relating to regional administration and general elections – agreed on the government’s proposal to postpone the 2020 concurrent regional elections to December 9, 2020. The decision was made on Tuesday (14/4/2020) in a working meeting between Commission II with Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian and a hearing with officials from the General Elections Commission (KPU), Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP).
“Commission II of the Indonesian House approved the government’s initiative on postponing the concurrent regional elections 2020 until December 9, 2020,” said the Chair of Commission II of the Indonesian House, Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tandjung, in a session held virtually from Nusantara Building, Parliamentary Compound, Jakarta, Tuesday (14/4/2020).
Before following up on the next steps of the 2020 Concurrent Regional Elections, Tandjung Added, Commission II together with Home Affairs Minister and the General Elections Commission (KPU) will hold a working meeting once the Covid-19 alert status is withdrawn to discuss the latest situation on the Covid-19 mitigation, as well as progress of the final preparation of the 2020 Concurrent Regional Elections.
"Referring to the Constitutional Court’s Decision number 55/PUU-XVII/2019 and in light of evaluation results of the 2019 concurrent General Elections, Commission II proposed to the government to adjust the organization of the 5-year term general elections in 2020, 2022, 2023, 2025 and the upcoming years, which will later become part of the amendments to Article 201 of Law Number 10 of 2016 regarding the Enactment of Government Regulation in Lieu of Law on General Elections,“ said the Golkar Party politician concluding the working meeting and hearing.
